Was stationed at Korat RTAFB, 388th FMS during LB-II. We launched EB-66s, F-105 WW, A-7Ds, and F-4 day and night. Proud of the small part I played in the mission. More proud of the flight crews and I salute you!

I was stuck with coordinating the flight planning on the first night on Guam. One oif the old guys from WWII and Korea kept saying that "you can't fly a mission like this because you will get your a-s shot off. We didn't get away with in WWII or Korea." On the third night with an identical mission profile he predictred that we would lose a bunch of birds, which we did. The Norths Air Order of Battle was well known to our Elint people but the word apparently did not filter down to Air Ops. when I worked at GD after retirement, I worked on Compass Ears which was the data link from the Elint Aircraft to Air Ops. Too late!

In 1972 I was an Air Force SSGT, I was the gunner on Barksdale crew E-14, we flew G models out of Anderson. We flew on the first night as wave lead, Amber-1 with the Hanoi railroad yards as our target. We took alot of SAMS and two near misses knocked out almost all of our ECM. I could here the radio calls and lots of beepers, I also heard Charcoal- 2 report the loss of Charcoal-1. It was a long flight back to Anderson. I remember when I sat down in front of the Wing Gunner at debrief the first thing he say was "You know they got Fergie" I left the Air Force at the end of my enlistment and later joined the Coast Guard flying search and rescue.

I flew the first F-4 Wild Weasel combat mission in SEA, and flew 8 of the 11 nights of Linebacker II. Name of my Phantom: Brain Damage. First night saw over 250 SAMs airborne over Hanoi. Most of my time was spent within 20 miles of Hanoi shooting SAM sites with Shrike missiles. Had one Mig engagement with Mig-21 and Mig-19 on night of 20 Dec over Banana Valley SW of Hanoi. Later transferred to USN and flew Tomcats and Phantoms from carriers.
